ATSIC S05E27 - Closing

Last weekend I sent Dice the usual folder of new boom bap stuff, featuring the expected 2 or 3 hours of unplayed music that I’d enjoyed and picked up/been sent over the past few weeks. He went ahead and did 2 mixes in the same day, nearly emptying the vaults for the subgenre. There’s a bit of everything in both mixes, as the intent was more just playing everything we’d had stockpiled than it was to compile a thematic playlist. It’s all lyrical boom bap, but the topics vary - brag raps to street raps to activist raps to summer anthems that needed airing before the leaves start changing.

This one has all sorts of talent on display from across the country, with Quake Matthews, SAYZEE, and Lotus James all making two separate appearances during this hour. Plenty besides them tho - Lee Reed says what needed saying on “River to the Sea” with fellow Hamiltonian Danny Miles. Tone Chop & Frost Gamble keep putting in the work with “Raising the Bar VII”, with Frost flexing a beat swap every 8 bars and Tone rhyming for 48 straight. Edmonton’s Saskatoon Folk Rap Records representative Epic teams with Winnipeg producer/emcee Rob Crooks to reminisce about a sad white rapper he used to know for the lead single from their “Nassau Manor” album. Sweatshop Union front man and Vancouver rap veteran Kyprios is back in action, linking with Toronto’s Ivason Black on “All They Do” - the new single from Ivason’s new album “Internal Monologue”. G4 Jag channels Beanie Seigle on his new Imperetiv produced single “Stopped Chillan”. Doc T raps 2 verses about fatherhood before rapping a 3rd verse written by his kid about him on the touching new track “Wherever You Are”. There’s a bunch more. Take a listen for yourself.

I do those things hoping people might stop by to talk about the new songs as I work, but one way or the other I’m doing the work so I might as well cut the cameras on and document the process while we build community week by week. Every week, I buy every song I play, unless the artist sent it to me, saving me a buck. I believe in buying music to support independent artists. Making music is time-consuming and expensive. Streaming doesn’t pay much at all, and since streaming has become the way most people consume music, it’s even more important to make sure to buy tickets, buy music (physical or digital), and buy merch from artists you want to hear more from. Streaming pays next to nothing, so if you want artists working on more music instead of working more shifts at their day job, you need to show them love by opening your wallet and giving them financial support.

I’m taking the summer off to enjoy life a little, but I’ll be back September 10 with weekly talks featuring artists across the country talking about the craft and the industry grind.
