Fly in Formation - MindBender & The Mighty Rhino
I’d been sleeping on MindBender, I can’t lie. Somehow in my efforts to keep tabs on everyone making Hip Hop in this country, I missed him. I reached out to the Mighty Rhino, who I’ve been aware of and happy to support since the first season of #ATSIC, to see if he wanted to talk on Fly in Formation. I see him active on social media discussing Hip Hop, probably more so than any other canadian rapper I can think of, so I thought we’d have an easy time filling an hour. He told me he was in the process of starting a new podcast with MindBender, who was a name I had seen around (I was following on IG already, just largely uninitiated to his music), so I proposed that they both come through on Zoom to talk about what they’ve been up to individually and together. A few days after I booked them, I saw Thomas Quinlan post the vinyl label from an early Handsolo Records release, and one of the songs on it was a Mindbender track. There was no shortage of history to be discussed, and I genuinely think you’d be hard pressed to find 2 people who know more about the canadian scene than these 2 do.
Rhino joined up almost an hour into the talk, so it gave me plenty of time to get to know MindBender a bit as we discussed old rap mags, his new album King of Queen Street, his late brother Conspiracy, his history in Alberta, and a lot more. They tagged out and I continued to talk with The Mighty Rhino, basically doing two of these things back to back. Lots of jewels dropped throughout this one.
