ATSIC is Still Right Here
I just posted the newest episode of my mix show, After the Smoke is Clear (#ATSIC) to Mixcloud. Realized I hadn’t posted over here for a while, so thought I’d write about the show as a bit of a refresher.
It plays twice weekly on FM in Southern AB, and the archives are all available to listen free over on Mixcloud. The show has been running since 2019, when someone from CKXU offered me the slot after touring the SCS I was working at and seeing the Hip Hop program (ARCHES Mic Club) where I was working with and recording artists 5 days a week.
Since then, ATSIC has grown a lot. I play my favourite new release Hip Hop every week, with an emphasis on playing under discovered artists. Most of the tracks I’m playing are under 5k plays when they air. Some are on #ATSIC before they go to streaming, and some never hit streaming cuz the DJs dont clear the samples or because the artists refuse to “sell out” to the corporate powers that be. I play it all, mixed in with the better known emcees who don’t need any assists at this point.
I gravitate to the more traditional east coast boom bap style, but I like all sorts of different rap, and try to represent the kulture fully from old head rap to new era trap and drill. It’s all Hip Hop to me. Conscious and gangster content both get burn, just on different episodes. The newest episode is one of the rarities where I focused on playing danceable music throughout, but it’s still all indie, all canadian, and all from the past few months at least.
Take ATSIC mixes to the gym, or on a jog, or commute. Strap on some headphones and get you some solitude assisted by the best lyricists you’ve never heard of. Blast them at the BBQ or while you’re playing some video games. There are mixes for all occasions. Dig in and enjoy.
