BEEN COPIN’ LYRIC VIDEO

I said there was more coming. There still is. This one should get to Itunes and Spotify soon enough, probably next week some time. For now the video is up on Youtube or my IG. Drop a like or share the link to help expand the reach, that stuff helps a ton with manipulating the social media algorithms and convincing them to actually show the post to some people. A few interactions can start the momentum, so I greatly appreciate any time I see someone do that. Sometimes this music shit, or content creation in general (shouts to my Twitch fam), can start to feel like yelling into the void.

Yelling into the void can be great therapy, regardless who’s listening. Writing my thoughts out and speaking them out loud has helped keep me grounded through the years. It makes the thoughts more real. In times when it feels like there’s no end in sight, I’ve used Hip Hop to remind myself that things will get better. The whole mixtape series I did a decade ago, “Feelin’ Pretty Good”, was a mantra I yelled, in the same fashion that some people read a self help book and it tells them to look in the mirror and tell themselves they’re important and capable every morning. The Gospel of Hip Hop, (which I’ll write about some time..), as well as plenty of other sources, teach the idea that word manifests, and that you have to be careful of what you say out loud because what you’re doing is building a path for yourself, whether you realize it or not. The last song Biggie ever recorded was “You’re Nobody Til Somebody Kills You.” I think that law is extra heavy in Hip Hop, where we all hold rappers to an expectation that they’re going to tell us the truth. At least some of us still feel like a rapper should be speaking from experience and based in reality.

With this song I wanted to delve into the feelings of depression that I’ve struggled with on and off through my whole life. Even though it’s become the norm for rappers to tell us all the perscription drugs they’re taking recreationally, I think there’s still a lot of work to push mental health into the forefront and start discussing it more openly, reducing the stigma, all that. The reality is that plenty of us, even at the best of times, but especially with this pandemic and the economic struggles all around us, I think there are probably a lot of us barely holding on. Personally this song isn’t actually how I’ve been feeling lately, as this time in isolation has been a bit of a dream come true in allowing me to focus in and get a lot of art done that I’ve always had to prioritize second, behind paying bills. That’s fortunate for me, but I feel for all the people who have lost jobs or especially those who have lost friends or family to COVID 19. If you’ve been dealing with thoughts of suicide, please reach out. Life can get better, you never know what’s around the corner. When I moved to Lethbridge I was in a bad place, with not a lot of hope it would improve. Then it all turned out better than I could imagine. Even if you feel like there’s no hope, hang in there. Do things that will help future you. Build yourself, and be aware that you can’t change the past, but you certainly can influence the future. There are people out in the world who you’ve never met who would help you if they could. Reach out. The number I posted at the start of this video, to text 686868, will connect you with the Kids Help Phones crisis line. There are many similar numbers and sites and societies set up for people to support one another. Let them help. It can get better.

Thanks for listening, and reading.

Stay Up.
