NO VIDEO (LYRIC VIDEO)
Posted a new song, No Video. This was something I very recently wrote and recorded on a beat I leased from Baggy Lean. I’ve known this guy for probably around a decade now, and done an assortment of songs on beats he made over the years. Most, if not all of those have never seen the light of day. I’ve actually performed some of the songs, but never had them posted for people to listen to. Sometimes the reason for keeping them shelved was because we were talking about doing more, putting an album out. Then life happens, things get back burner-ed, and when you return to them you’re unsure of the quality and want to do upgrades. So you do, and the songs get better, but they still don’t get released because the project isn’t done. One way or the other, I currently have 5 or 6 songs mixed and mastered and ready to release that are on beats from Baggy Lean. Beyond his prowess producing instrumentals, he’s a well respected and decorated member of the Hip Hop community in Edmonton. He’s been, as far as I can tell, an integral part of a group called Skratcher’s Edmonton chapter, (a meet up jam session for DJs who want to practice and build together), a top tier competitor at DJ competitions, an anchor holding down the community, and a good friend over the years. Honestly it’s my pleasure and honour to rap on his beats.
Baggy Lean just opened his Beatstars account recently. He’s been pushing it online and I decided to check it out. Thought to myself that I might as well snag a couple more and finish the project already. Maybe get another album ready to go and do back to back albums after “10 From 11” with DJ Moves drops. So I bought a lease on this one. It’s still there if any of you want to take a swing at out rapping me, have at it. That was half of the intent of doing this song so quick. There are too many dope emcees lurking around in the shadows to have all these beats sit and collect dust on Baggy’s Beatstars account. If we aren’t supporting our artist friends, who’s going to? By supporting one another we automatically add value to the art. This is how we grow a community.
“Money where your mouth is time if your bars arent a problem.” - That’s me on the Moves album.
I wrote this song and recorded it the same night, then sent it to Deez Waxx to mix and master, and then got it to the digital distribution machine asap. It all took about a week I think. The point of the song is just that a lot of the time I think emcees get a bit wrapped up in all the talk about how in order to be taken seriously, we need to have a “professional presentation” or a promotional roll out orchestrated over several weeks or months, including photo shoots and teaser videos. I know it’s a bit of a joke that there’s a lyric video for a track I named “No Video”. But it’s the words, it’s not me looking cool in front of a carefully chosen or arranged backdrop. That’s cool. Sometimes it’s cool to look cool. I get it. I’ll do some of that soon enough. I just feel like the music itself is the more important part, and we as emcees too often back burner it because all the rest isn’t perfectly aligned or planned or bought in preparation. Sometimes we just have to be about the music. This is freestyle marketing, I’m making the strategies up as I go. I’m not going to run out of things to say any time soon, so why not?
The rest of the songs I have on Baggy Lean’s instrumentals might just continue to slide out onto the internet once in a while, or maybe I’ll stop messing around typing think pieces and finish something we can release as a project already. Whatever happens, there are a lot more singles still coming. There’s also that full length album produced by DJ Moves on the very near horizon. 10 From 11. It’s completely ready to release right now. So I’ll do that sometime.
Stay Up.
